With Internet and network connectivity in TVs we have entered a new era where the smartphone or tablet can take control of your tv. With your gadget, you can select the channel, adjust the volume and use the keyboard of your smartphone to search your favorite videos, or even those pages of news for you.
Controlling Your TV with Your Smartphone
Why is this necessary? Because many times, you are your phone and the remote control is never around. And more importantly, it allows you to use the phone keypad to type texts with greater ease.
Not all TVs support remote control via smartphone, but more and more new TVs come with this technology, even being added to the kits home theater and Blu-Ray. If you have a TV from 2010, there is a good chance that you have connectivity with a smartphone device or tablet. If you have a 2011 model, there’s an even better chance. Search for your model of TV specific in the manufacturer’s website to verify.

How to Configure Your Smartphone or Tablet to Function As a TV Remote Control?
Here is a guide step-by-step instructions to get you started:
Wireless home network
First of all you need a wireless home network. If you do not have a wireless router, purchase one at your local store. Preferably, with the default of “n” which is faster.
Put the TV on the network
Now you need to connect the TV to your home network, either wirelessly or via cable. Some televisions will need adapters to be able to have access to the internet. Check the manual of your device which is your case.
The cable connection is much more easy: just connect the internet cable on your tv. Already the Wi-Fi requires you to go through some configuration steps. Follow the steps in the menu of network settings in the TV menu and find your own local wireless network. Type the password and you should be ready.
Download the application
Now you need to download the App remote to your smartphone or tablet. Depending on your TV you need to download an app specific to the brand.
Pair TV and phone/tablet
Before you can start using your remote control you need to pair/sync the TV and your device. Open the application and follow the instructions on the screen. Sometimes you need to enter the TV menu and find a configuration option of the remote control.
Limitations When You Use the Smartphone or Tablet As a Remote Control
There are some limitations, however. The most important of them is the lack of compatibility “wake-on-lan” in the majority of televisions. Basically, this means that you can’t turn the TV on with the device, just navigate and turn the TV off. There are some ways to transform your smartphone/tablet into a universal remote control for your home theater system, however.
First, check in the app store of your device to see if there are apps for your home theater components. If the component of home theater system connects to the internet, there is a good chance that there is an app available for your smartphone. Many receivers of modern audio and video electronics and entertainment have their own applications.
Some televisions require that the smartphone/tablet has a sensor or transmitter specific to operate as a remote control. Check the manual of your TV and of your gadget to know if they can be used.
Other Options Remote Control for Your Appliances
If you are not able to get apps for all your components, you may want to consider a universal remote control. There are even adapters for smartphones and tablets that turn your device into a universal remote control. It is worth to search and try to find a compatible model for you.
